The Federal High Court in Abuja granted bail on Wednesday to 10 Nigerians charged with treason for their involvement in the recent #EndBadGovernance protests.
Judge Emeka Nwite set bail at N10 million for each defendant, with conditions including a surety who owns property of equal value in Abuja.
The defendants, arrested during last month’s demonstrations, faced accusations of plotting to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s government. Their lawyers argued that the prosecution’s evidence failed to support the treason allegations.
Among the accused are Michael Tobiloba Adaramoye, 28, Adeyemi Abiodun Abayomi, 34, and Angel Love Innocent, 51, the sole female defendant. They all pleaded not guilty to six charges, including inciting mutiny and attempting to destabilize Nigeria.
The prosecutor’s claims included accusations that the protesters, in concert with a Mr. Wynee, called on the military “to take over the government from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.” The charges also alleged that the defendants engaged in “war against the state” by attacking police officers and damaging government buildings during the protests held from August 1 to 10.
Defense Attorney Johnathan Krill stated, “We are pleased with the court’s decision to grant bail. The charges against our clients are unfounded, and we look forward to proving their innocence.”
Judge Nwite ordered the sureties to submit their passports to the court.
