In the wake of devastating floods that have swept through Jigawa State, Governor Umar Namadi has initiated a comprehensive relief program for over 15,000 displaced residents.
The disaster, which has claimed 36 lives, has left a trail of destruction across 17 local government areas.
Speaking at the launch of the relief distribution in Kiyawa, Governor Namadi expressed his condolences to the bereaved families. “Our hearts go out to those who have lost loved ones and livelihoods in this calamity,” he said.
The Governor pledged ongoing support, stating, “We are working tirelessly with federal agencies, NGOs, and generous individuals to provide continued assistance to all affected.”
The State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has been at the forefront of the crisis response. Executive Secretary Haruna Mairiga revealed the scale of the disaster: “Over 50,000 households have been impacted, with 15,755 individuals currently sheltered across 12 IDP camps.”
Commissioner for Special Duties, Auwal Dalladi-Sankara, highlighted the government’s swift action.
“SEMA’s prompt response included immediate relief distribution, followed by a second wave of aid. Today marks our third round of support for those in IDP camps,” he explained.
The relief effort is not just about immediate aid; SEMA is utilizing a comprehensive register, compiled in collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), to ensure targeted and effective support for flood victims.
As the distribution began, 1,200 displaced persons in Buji and 3,200 in Kiyawa were among the first beneficiaries.
Officials assured that the program would extend to all IDP camps across the state.
