The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially announced November 8, 2025, as the date for the Anambra State governorship election.
This decision was revealed by INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu during a meeting with political parties in Abuja on Thursday.
Yakubu explained the timing, stating, “As you are aware, the last governorship election in Anambra State was held on 6th November 2021. By the effluxion of time, the governorship election is due next year. Consequently, the Commission has approved that the 2025 Anambra State Governorship election will hold on Saturday 8th November 2025.”
The INEC chairman outlined key dates in the electoral timeline: November 13, 2024: Formal notice of the election will be published, March 20 to April 10, 2025: Political parties will conduct their primaries, April 18 to May 12, 2025: Candidate nomination portal will be open, June 9, 2025: Final list of candidates will be published, June 11 to November 6, 2025: Public campaigning period for political parties
Yakubu assured that a detailed timetable and schedule of activities would be made available on INEC’s website and social media platforms, with hard copies distributed to relevant parties.
This announcement comes as Nigeria continues to refine its electoral processes. The 2021 Anambra governorship election saw Professor Chukwuma Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) emerge victorious, and his tenure is set to conclude in March 2026.
In related news, The Explainer reported that the INEC has also initiated the distribution of Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) for the upcoming Ondo State governorship election.
“The collection of Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) from the last Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) commenced today in Ondo State,” Yakubu confirmed.
The PVC collection process in Ondo State will occur in two phases: October 17-21, 2024: Cards available at 203 wards across the state, October 23-29, 2024: Cards available at 18 Local Government Area offices
Collection centers will operate from 9 am to 5 pm daily, ensuring accessibility for eligible voters.
