The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) released devastating statistics on Thursday, revealing the nationwide flooding’s impact.
NEMA Director General Zubaida Umar presented the grim figures at the National Emergency Coordination Forum (ECF).
“Our latest data shows that 29 states and 172 local government areas have been affected,” Umar stated.
He added, “Over a million citizens are affected, with 625,239 displaced from their homes. Tragically, we have recorded 259 fatalities.”
The flood crisis aligns closely with predictions from the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA).
Their Annual Flood Outlook had warned of high-risk areas across 33 states and 135 local government areas from July to September 2024.
Umar highlighted the particularly severe situation in Borno State, where a damaged spillway at the Alau Dam has exacerbated flooding.
She praised the swift response of Governor Babagana Zulum and local authorities in managing evacuations and setting up camps for the displaced.
“NEMA and partner agencies are providing vital support nationwide,” Umar explained. “We are deploying additional personnel, distributing water purification equipment, and supplying food and essential items to affected communities.”
The NEMA chief emphasized ongoing efforts to assist flood victims. “Through NEMA, the Federal Government expresses deep sympathy for those impacted by this disaster,” she said.
She added, “We assure them that necessary aid will continue to be provided.”
Umar acknowledged the crucial role of humanitarian partners in the flood response.
“We are grateful for their support and look forward to sustained collaboration in mitigating the impact of these floods across Nigeria,” she said.
