The Federal Government and Labour Unions have reached a landmark agreement, signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to implement a new minimum wage of ₦70,000 for civil servants.
This development was announced on Friday by the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation.
According to Eno Olotu, Head of Information and Public Relations, the committee on salaries for civil servants set July 29, 2024, as the implementation date for the new minimum wage .
The agreement also stipulates that the previously discontinued wage award will be reinstated and paid until July 28, 2024.
Didi Walson-Jack, Head of Civil Service of the Federation and committee chair, emphasized the government’s consideration of the country’s economic situation in reaching this decision.
She stated, “Both the Trade Union and the Government sides have agreed on the Consequential Adjustments in Salaries arising from the new minimum wage of ₦70,000.”
Walson-Jack praised the committee members for their diligent efforts, describing the negotiations as “the shortest and most peaceful” to date.
She confirmed that all members had reviewed and signed the MoU, with copies distributed to representatives from both sides.
The signed document will now be forwarded to the Federal Government for further action.
Comrade Benjamin Anthony, National Chairman of the Joint Negotiating Council representing the Trade Union side, expressed satisfaction with the committee’s work and commended Walson-Jack for her leadership.
