The Federal Government of Nigeria, in partnership with the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), has acknowledged the progress made in child protection through the domestication and implementation of the Child Rights Act (CRA).
During a symposium and interactive session with students from various schools, the Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs. Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to prioritizing the rights of children across the country. The event, held at the Government Science Technical School in Abuja, commemorated the Universal Day of the Child.
Kennedy-Ohanenye highlighted that the government has consistently focused on ensuring children’s access to fundamental necessities, education, and protection from abuse and violence. She stressed the importance of safeguarding and guaranteeing the protection of children, emphasizing the significance of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda in creating a new Nigeria where children’s rights are inviolable.
Chikodi Onyemerela, UNICEF’s Director of Programmes in Nigeria, emphasized that children’s rights to quality healthcare, education, development opportunities, as well as protection from emotional abuse and other forms of harm, should never be compromised. Recognizing that children are the future of the country, Onyemerela underscored the importance of providing them with all the necessary rights and resources to become responsible and contributing adults.

He further discussed the need for Nigeria to prioritize children in governance, ensuring that the country allocates sufficient resources to their well-being and development.
