The Explainer fact checkers have spotted some images making the round on social media, with the claim that Nigeria’s recently inaugurated President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced a reduction in thee allowance of National Youth Service Corps members. The images suggested that President Tinubu has reduced the monthly allowance of NYSC from 33,000 to 25,000. In one of the images posted, the claim was made that in a recent meeting between the Federal Government and the National Youth Service Corps, there was a disappointing decision of a reduction of the allowance of the corps members. The claim read; Ladies and gentlemen, the recent meeting between the Federal Government and the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) @officiallyNYSCng unfortunately resulted in the disappointing decision that there will be no financial support for NYSC corps members. Despite this set back, I encourage all corps members to remain resilient and committed to the core values of national service.

A facebook user, Gaberiel Enemona Oganaji also posted the image with a caption that read; “NYSC allowance to be reduced from 33k to 25k to fund ASUU.” The Explainer did a rigorous check and found no evidence to back up the claim. To trace the source of the images The Explainer also deployed the reverse image search, and the result was that the circulating images were generated using a tool called the Breaking News Generator. This online resource allow user to create graphics that resemble news stories, especially for television platforms. Further findings by the Explainer shows that no credible media published the claims. The Explainer fact-checkers can therefore assert with evidence that the circulating images claiming that there is a plan to reduce NYSC allowances are fake images generated to misinform unsuspecting members of the public.
