A circulating video on social media alleges that two Nigerians were arrested at the Egypt-Gaza border while attempting to flee with $1.6 million of stolen money.
The Explainer fact checker, spotted a video which alleged that two Nigerians have been arrested for stolen money at Egypt Gaza border. The fact checker at The Explainer utilized INVID, a video verification tool, to investigate the claim. The analysis revealed that the images and allegations actually originated from a cybercrime arrest in India, completely unrelated to Gaza.
Further investigation led the fact checker to a page on X, where the Indian cybercrime police unit in Rachakonda shared photos of the arrested individuals on August 24, 2023. The suspects were identified as Omenonye Sylvester and Alimeke Endurance Chukkwuka, not the individuals named “Chinaza” and “Ekperifuna” as claimed in the video.
Additionally, a reverse image search of one of the screenshots showing the money depicted in the video uncovered its circulation for over seven years. The image was originally used as cover art for a song published on SoundCloud on August 10, 2016, having no connection to the false claim of stolen money.
Therefore, the claim that two Nigerians were arrested at the Egypt-Gaza border with $1.6 million they allegedly stole from their Gazan employer is false.
There are no credible evidences to support the claims that two Nigerians were involved in stealing $1.6 million from their Gazan employer and being arrested at the Egypt-Gaza border. The video and related claims are misleading, as they actually pertain to a separate incident involving cybercrime arrests in India.
