The Ekiti State Government has initiated the final phase of compensation payments, distributing N300 million to 377 landowners affected by the construction of the State Agro Allied Cargo Airport in Ado-Ekiti.
Governor Biodun Oyebanji, represented by Deputy Governor Monisade Afuye, announced the disbursement during a cheque presentation ceremony to landowners from Ijan, Igbemo, Afao, and Iworoko communities on Thursday in Ado-Ekiti.
Speaking at the event, which marked the third and final tranche of compensation, Oyebanji emphasized the airport’s strategic importance:
“The facility is intended to expand the state’s economy, open a new vista of economic opportunities and investments and bolster industrial development.”
The governor addressed those still awaiting compensation, urging them not to interfere with construction work:
“Those whose lands were acquired in the public interest and have not been compensated should not disturb contractors on site.” He assured that all legitimate claims would be settled.
Highlighting the project’s economic potential, Oyebanji explained:
“The vision of the airport is to improve the state’s connectivity to national and international markets and serve as a gateway for agriculture, commerce, and tourism to fuel local businesses.”
The governor praised the affected landowners for their patience and patriotism: “The claimants we are honouring here today have demonstrated an inspiring commitment to the future of Ekiti, agreeing to adjust their lives for a greater good that will ultimately benefit every citizen of this state.”
He further emphasized the administration’s commitment: “Let this be a testament to our administration’s dedication to fulfilling its promises. We understand that the prompt and fair compensation of those affected is not only a legal obligation but a moral one. Your sacrifice and cooperation with this administration are deeply valued.”
James Olaleye, Special Adviser to the governor on Geographic Information System, Lands and Survey, characterized the compensation as relief for the affected landowners: “This compensation serves as indemnity against losses suffered by the landowners. I hope those concerned will understand the genuine efforts of the present government to bring all their worries to the past.”
Olaleye also offered assurance to other project site claimants: “I hereby assure all the claimants who are being owed compensations for other project sites, that very soon, all their dues will be settled.”
Community representatives Ojo Awe and Olufemi Oso expressed gratitude on behalf of the beneficiaries, commending Governor Oyebanji’s response to their situation through expeditious compensation payments.
