Rev. David Ugolor has penned an urgent appeal to His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, seeking royal intervention in the escalating cult-related violence plaguing Edo State.
In a formal letter addressed to the revered monarch, Rev. Ugolor highlighted the recent tragic developments that have shaken the state’s peace.
“The Edo State Police Command has confirmed the tragic death of one individual in a renewed cult clash, with reports indicating that the toll may be as high as eight lives lost,” he wrote, emphasizing the growing concern over the violent activities of the Eiye and Vikings confraternities.
The religious leader specifically called on the traditional ruler to consider employing spiritual measures similar to those previously used in combating human trafficking.
“Your words carry immense weight, and we believe that a similar invocation against the perpetrators of these violent acts could send a powerful message to those involved in such heinous activities,” Rev. Ugolor stated in his appeal.
The letter comes at a crucial time as Edo State undergoes a political transition, with Governor Obaseki preparing to hand over power to Senator Monday Okpebholo. Rev. Ugolor emphasized the importance of the monarch’s role during this period:
“We encourage you, Your Majesty, to act as a bridge between both parties, facilitating open dialogue and the sharing of vital information that can ensure a smooth transition.”
The appeal underscores the traditional ruler’s potential influence in creating an environment conducive to addressing the state’s pressing security challenges.
“Your guidance and support in creating an enabling environment for collaboration will be crucial in addressing the pressing issues facing Edo State, including the alarming rise in cult violence,” the letter noted.
Rev. Ugolor expressed confidence in the monarch’s ability to effect positive change: “By promoting peace and cooperation, you can help steer our state towards a brighter future for all Edo people.”
The letter concluded with a plea for swift action, highlighting the community’s trust in the traditional ruler’s wisdom and leadership to restore peace and security to the kingdom.
This appeal reflects growing public concern over the escalating cult violence and the need for both traditional and modern governance structures to work together in addressing this serious security challenge.
The rising cult violence in Edo State has become a major concern for residents and authorities alike, with recent clashes between rival groups resulting in multiple casualties and creating an atmosphere of fear and insecurity across the state.
