Jake Epelle, founder of The Albino Foundation (TAF) Africa, has condemned the recent Edo gubernatorial election as “one of the worst” in Nigeria’s history, citing irregularities and logistical failures.
In an interview with Channels Television on Monday, Epelle expressed deep disappointment with the electoral process.
“It’s unfortunate that I will personally describe this election as one of the worst taking into cognisance the level of preparation and assurance,” he stated.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared APC’s Monday Okepboholo the winner with 291,667 votes, followed by PDP’s Asue Ighodalo with 247,274 votes.
However, the election was marred by protests from PDP supporters alleging result fabrication.
Epelle highlighted the need for urgent electoral reforms, particularly in addressing logistical challenges.
“I don’t know why we keep having these logistical problems over the years. INEC should look the other way especially when it comes to the road transport union,” he remarked.
The activist warned of potential issues in future elections if these problems remain unaddressed.
“If we don’t take time and correct some of these issues, you will see the same thing playing out in Ondo or even in the 2027 general election,” Epelle cautioned.
He also expressed concern over the vast resources invested during the election process.
“It is deeply concerning, especially considering the huge amount of money and resources invested,” Epelle noted.
He added, “I think maybe the COVID was a blessing in disguise because somehow some of the processes and the provisions despite the harsh realities of that time were followed to a large extent.”
Epelle emphasized his non-partisan stance, stating, “I am apolitical. I don’t care who wins. In this context, both the APC and PDP violated the rules.”
Despite his criticisms, Epelle praised the media’s coverage of the election for their comprehensive and inclusive reporting.
