ECOWAS, the 15-nation Economic Community of West African States, has taken a strong stance against the military junta in Niger.
In a recent statement after its summit in Abuja, Nigeria, ECOWAS demanded the immediate release and reinstatement of the elected President, Mohamed Bazoum, who has been unjustly held by the military since Wednesday.
To convey the seriousness of their demands, ECOWAS has given the military junta a strict ultimatum of one week to vacate power and restore democratic governance, thereby returning President Bazoum to his rightful position.
If these demands are not met within the specified time frame, ECOWAS will not hesitate to take all necessary measures to restore constitutional order in the Republic of Niger, which may include the use of force.
In response to the crisis, an emergency meeting of the chiefs of defence staff from all ECOWAS member states has been convened to address the situation promptly.
This indicates the gravity of the situation and the collective commitment of the regional bloc to uphold democratic principles and the rule of law.
As part of its measures to exert pressure on the military junta and hold them accountable, ECOWAS has announced the suspension of all commercial and financial transactions between member states and Niger.
Additionally, energy transactions with Niger have been halted. To further assert their position, ECOWAS is freezing Niger’s assets in its central and commercial banks, further isolating the military authorities involved in the coup attempt.
In a bid to prevent any cooperation with the illegitimate regime, ECOWAS has imposed a travel ban and asset freeze on the military officials involved in the coup attempt.
This restriction extends to their family members and any civilians who choose to support the institutions or government established by the coup leaders.
The statement expressing these strong actions and measures was read out at the conclusion of the crisis meeting by Nigerian President and ECOWAS chairman, Bola Tinubu, underscoring the unity and resolve of the regional bloc in handling this critical situation.
ECOWAS’s decisive response sends a clear message that any attempt to undermine democracy and the will of the people in the region will not be tolerated.
