Chima Udoye has emerged victorious as the winner of Nigerian Idol Season 9.
The talented vocalist’s journey to the top spot culminated on Sunday night, marking the end of a fiercely competitive season that showcased some of Nigeria’s finest musical talents.
The Explainer gathered that Udoye’s triumph comes with a substantial reward package, including a ₦30 million cash prize, a brand new SUV, a DStv Explora decoder, and a one-year premium subscription. Additionally, the rising star has secured a coveted music deal and the production of a music video to kickstart his professional career.
The grand finale was a spectacular affair, opening with a powerful ensemble performance of John Legend’s “Glory” by the top 10 contestants.
The evening also featured appearances by previous Nigerian Idol champions, including Progress (Season 7 winner) and Victory Gbakara (Season 8 winner), who treated the audience to memorable performances.
Throughout the competition, Udoye consistently impressed the judging panel, composed of music industry veterans 9ice, Omawumi, and Ric Hassani. His onstage charisma and exceptional vocal talent often left the judges at a loss for words.
During the finale, judge Omawumi praised Udoye’s growth, noting that he had begun to “compete with himself” – a testament to his rapid development and potential beyond the confines of the competition.
Specializing in jazz and soul music, Udoye entered the competition with the goal of showcasing his vocal prowess and inspiring others through the Nigerian Idol platform. Twelve weeks of intense competition later, he has achieved that goal and more.
Busola Tejumola, Executive Head of Content & Channels for West Africa at MultiChoice, commended Udoye’s resilience and talent during the awards presentation.
