Democracy and Development (CDD West Africa) and the National Democratic Institute (NDI), with support from Global Affairs Canada, to to hold conference on countering disinformation to tackle disinformation, hate speech, and other information manipulation issues.
The conference is scheduled to take place from July 9 to 11, 2024, in Lagos.
Dr. Dauda Garuba, Director of CDD West Africa, in a statement shared with The Explainer, stated that “Disinformation undermines democratic trust.”
According to the statement, key players in civil society, media, and state institutions will gather in Lagos for the Second West Africa Conference on Countering Information Manipulation.
The statement read in part: “The conference will focus on sharing best practices and developing strategies to counter these threats, particularly in elections and transitional contexts.
“Key discussions will include: Tactics used to spread misinformation in recent elections, the dual role of Artificial Intelligence in combating and creating disinformation,
“The impact of harmful information on marginalized communities, including women, and tools and methodologies for monitoring the online space.
“The event will feature keynote speeches, panel discussions, workshops, and networking sessions, both in-person and online. Participants will engage in interactive discussions and case studies, learning from experts on the frontline of combating disinformation.
“A pre-conference survey allows a wider audience to share their experiences with disinformation. Registration for the conference is open to both physical and online participants.”
