The Borno State Government has declared an immediate 24-hour curfew across the state following a devastating bomb attack that claimed 16 lives and left numerous others critically injured.
The Explainer learned, the incident occurred at Kawori Market in the Konduga area, believed to be the work of a Boko Haram suicide bomber.
Governor Babagana Umar Zulum, in consultation with top security officials, implemented this measure to restore law and order and ensure public safety. The decision was announced in an official statement released by the Borno State Police Command.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nahum Kenneth Daso, the Police Public Relations Officer for Borno State, issued the statement on behalf of the Commissioner of Police. He emphasized the constitutional mandate of the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to maintain peace and order in the state.
“You are all aware of the incident that took place at Kawori which was the detonation of improvised explosive devices ordinance device which led to the death of 16 persons while several others were critically injured and on admission across various Government hospitals in the state,” ASP Daso stated.
The statement further explained the rationale behind the curfew: “In line with our constitutional mandate towards the restoration of law and order, his Excellency the Executive Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Umar Zulum, in consultation with heads of security in the state, finds it expedient to declare a 24-hour curfew in the state with immediate effect.”
ASP Daso called for public cooperation, urging residents to remain calm and law-abiding during this challenging period. He assured citizens that they would be kept informed of any developments, stating, “Further developments will be communicated to you accordingly please.”
Residents are advised to stay tuned to official channels for updates and to comply strictly with the curfew regulations until further notice.
