The Executive Chairman of Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Hon. Christopher Zakka Maikalangu, conducted an early morning visit to the Karu Community market on Friday, following a devastating fire that engulfed the area on Thursday night.
The Explainer learned, the blaze destroyed numerous shops and properties valued at millions of naira.
Accompanied by key officials including AMAC Speaker Hon. Mathew Yari, PDP AMAC Chairman Chief Godibeg Egbe, and Karu Ward Councilor Hon. Useni Dogo, Maikalangu surveyed the damage and offered words of comfort to the affected traders.
During his visit, Maikalangu pledged government support for the fire victims.
He stated, “The government will offer some support to the victims within its resources.” The Chairman also announced plans to dispatch the Council’s Emergency Management team for a thorough assessment of the damage.
“It was a great loss of property and livelihood, though we thank God that no life was lost to the inferno. We were able to respond quickly. Officials of the FCT Fire Service were here on time to control it, though we regret what had been destroyed before they came,” Maikalangu added.
The AMAC chairman expressed gratitude for the swift response of the State Fire Service in controlling the blaze and commended the security agencies for their rapid action. He emphasized the importance of the upcoming visit by the Council’s Emergency Management team to evaluate the extent of the damage accurately.
Maikalangu personally inspected several razed shops, gaining firsthand insight into the scale of destruction. He appreciated the collaborative efforts of all those who contributed to addressing the unfortunate incident promptly.
