Major General Olufemi Oluyede, the Acting Chief of Army Staff, appeared before the House of Representatives Joint Committee on Defence and Army in Abuja, pledging to bring lasting peace to Nigeria and emphasizing the need for a united national effort in addressing security challenges.
Appearing before the National Assembly on Wednesday, Oluyede highlighted his extensive military experience, having served the nation for over 30 years. He acknowledged the complexities of the current security environment and stressed the importance of strong bilateral and multilateral alliances with neighboring countries.
“I am honored to be considered worthy to play a part in these efforts,” Oluyede stated, reflecting on his appointment following the passing of Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja.
He described his nomination as a privileged opportunity to drive positive changes within the Nigerian Army and fulfill its constitutional responsibilities.
The Acting COAS emphasized the critical need for deep collaboration between various security agencies and services.
He underscored that addressing Nigeria’s security challenges requires a comprehensive and united approach from all Nigerians.
Addressing the committee, Oluyede also highlighted the Nigerian Army’s requirement for tactical aircraft to support combat operations.
He explained the distinct roles of tactical and strategic air support, noting the importance of having aircraft ready during force operations.
House Committee on Defence Chairman, Hon Babajimi Benson, provided context to the screening, acknowledging the evolving spectrum of security challenges facing Nigeria.
He emphasized the need for innovative and adaptive strategies to address threats that now extend beyond traditional battlefields.
Benson stressed the committee’s commitment to providing legislative oversight, ensuring adequate funding, and maintaining transparency in military operations. He urged the nominee to foster synergy among security agencies and prioritize the welfare of troops.
The Acting COAS expressed his commitment to justifying the confidence placed in him by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the National Assembly.
He promised to continue the excellent work of the Nigerian Army and contribute to restoring the country to a path of pride and success.
