Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe has boldly asserted that Nigeria would have experienced significant improvements had Labour Party’s Peter Obi won the 2023 presidential election.
In an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Abaribe, representing Abia South in the Senate, delivered a scathing critique of the current government’s leadership.
“If Peter Obi had won, you probably would have seen a better Nigeria than what we are seeing today,” he declared emphatically.
The seasoned politician pinpointed nepotism as a critical issue plaguing the current administration.
“Number one, he [Obi] would not be as nepotistic as this government, he won’t, it’s not in him. That is just who we are, we feel for the other people,” Abaribe explained.
Supporting his allegations, the Senator highlighted President Bola Tinubu’s controversial ministerial appointments. He questioned the logic behind appointing four ministers from a single state while many others receive minimal representation.
Tracing the roots of nepotistic practices, Abaribe noted that while former President Muhammadu Buhari initially set this precedent, the trend has deepened under Tinubu’s leadership.
“Buhari did it, and nobody said much except me,” he remarked.
Beyond political criticism, Abaribe offered a constructive perspective for the South-East region.
He urged local leaders to focus on revitalizing their communities, stating that waiting for presidential fairness is no longer a viable strategy.
The Senator also addressed recent developments in the Biafran separatist movement, welcoming the arrest of Simon Ekpa in Finland.
“The arrest will signal to purveyors of violence that their actions are unacceptable,” he said, emphasizing the Igbo community’s condemnation of such provocative actions.
Abaribe suggested that releasing Nnamdi Kanu could be a pivotal step in ending regional violence. “Many perpetrating violence under Kanu’s name would lose their motivation if he were released,” he explained.
