Kechi Okwuchi, a survivor of the Sosoliso plane crash that killed 106 people in 2005, has paid a heartfelt tribute to her 60 schoolmates who perished in the tragedy.
In an X post on Sunday, the 32-year-old singer and motivational speaker asked the “60 angels” to keep watching over her and the other survivor, as she made more memories for them.
“Dear 60 Angels, 18 years have passed since the Sosoliso plane crash that took your lives among other dear souls while sparing mine and 1 other,” she wrote.
“Another year, another new set of milestones. All for you. Please keep watching over me as I make even more memories for u.”
Okwuchi was one of the 61 students of Loyola Jesuit College, a boarding school in Abuja, who were on board the Sosoliso Airlines Flight 1145 from Abuja to Port Harcourt on December 10, 2005.
The plane crashed and burst into flames during landing at the Port Harcourt International Airport, killing all but two of the students and most of the crew and passengers.
Okwuchi suffered third-degree burns over 65% of her body and underwent more than 100 surgeries to recover from her injuries.
She went on to graduate with a first-class degree in economics from the University of St. Thomas in Texas, USA, and became a finalist on the 12th season of America’s Got Talent in 2017.
She has also been an advocate for burn survivors and a source of inspiration for many people around the world.
She told CNN in 2017 that she wanted to honor the memory of her schoolmates by living her life to the fullest.
“I feel like I owe it to them to do something with this second chance that I was given,” she said.
