Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has announced a generous cash award initiative for state workers, aimed at cushioning the impact of fuel subsidy removal.
Starting from December and running until April 2024, Enugu State employees will receive cash bonuses ranging from N10,000 to N25,000.
Governor Mbah expressed his administration’s commitment to negotiating a new minimum wage and highlighted the importance of a contented workforce in achieving the state’s development goals.
During a joint press briefing with labor union leaders at the Government House in Enugu, the governor emphasized that the welfare of workers remains a top priority.
In addition to the cash transfers, Governor Mbah outlined various other social interventions implemented by the state government to improve the lives of Enugu State workers.
He announced the expansion of the state’s social register enrollment from 43,000 to 260,000, with the aim of lifting more indigent citizens out of poverty through cash transfers and other interventions.
Governor Mbah further affirmed his administration’s determination to eradicate poverty, targeting a zero percent poverty headcount index by 2031.
To support this goal, N1.5 billion has been allocated for social development programs, including water and sanitation projects in communities.
The state plans to construct 260 model primary health centers and 260 smart schools with teachers’ quarters.
Reacting to the governor’s announcement, Fabian Nwigbo, the chairperson of the Nigeria Labour Congress in Enugu State, and Benneth Asogwa, the Trade Union Congress counterpart, expressed gratitude for the proactive steps taken by the governor in addressing the welfare of Enugu workers.
They commended Governor Mbah for his commitment to timely salary payments, impending promotions, and his administration’s recognition of workers’ needs without the need for protests, strikes, or lobbying.
The governor’s gesture and commitment to workers’ welfare have been well-received by Enugu State employees, fostering a positive atmosphere as they engage in their respective roles.
