In a heartbreaking incident on Thursday morning, an elderly woman tragically lost her life when a building on Oloto Street, situated in the Oyingbo area of Lagos State, partially collapsed. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed that the unfortunate demise was a result of the impact from the partial collapse.
Miraculously, there were no reported injuries among the residents despite the catastrophic event. Promptly responding to the scene, LASEMA swiftly initiated search and rescue operations to ensure the safety and well-being of those in the vicinity.
Preliminary assessments by LASEMA unveiled that an internal suspended beam in one of the rooms gave way around 7:45 am. The incident was attributed to the aging infrastructure and a lack of proper maintenance, highlighting the urgent need for structural reviews and upkeep.
Upon the declaration of the collapse, the affected building has been cordoned off to secure the area and prevent further risks. To address this concerning issue, the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has been promptly notified and is actively responding to enforce necessary measures and evaluate the safety of surrounding structures.
