Nigerian actress and singer, Mercy Isoyip, popularly known as Descushiel, has apologised to Nigerians and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) after she recited the national anthem wrongly during the Conference for Senior Police Officers in Imo State. Descushiel, who put on the police uniform during the conference, went viral on Monday after she missed the lyrics while reciting the national anthem at the event.
This led to criticisms from some Nigerians on social media as they trolled Descushiel, who was presumed to be a policewoman because of her outfit. However, in a video on her Instagram account on Tuesday, Descushiel apologised for her mistakes.
“I sincerely apologise for the error I made during the recital of the National Anthem, I know such errors are inexcusable,” Descushiel said.
“My good people of our country, please accept my apology, as well as my assurance that I will be more careful in the future to prevent such incidents from recurring.
“I also want to clarify that I am not a policewoman. I was invited by the NPF to perform at the conference and retreat for senior officers in Owerri. I wore the uniform as a sign of respect and honour to the men and women in uniform who risk their lives daily to protect us.
“I have nothing but admiration and appreciation for the NPF and I did not intend to disrespect them in any way. I am deeply sorry for any embarrassment or inconvenience this may have caused them,” she added.
Descushiel also thanked the NPF for giving her the opportunity to showcase her talent and entertain them at the event. She said she was grateful for their support and encouragement.
The Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers, which had the theme ‘Fostering Economic Prosperity, Social Integration and Political Development through Enhanced Internal Security Mechanism’, was held from October 30 to November 1 at the Landmark Event Centre in Owerri
The event was well attended by representatives of South-East state governments, top police officers, top officers from sister security agencies as well government officers
The conference and retreat was aimed at enhancing the capacity of senior police officers to effectively address the security challenges facing the country.
Descushiel is a Nigerian-born entertainer who resides in the United States of America. She came to limelight in 2016 after she was featured in the film, Paige.
