A press release purportedly from Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) has been circulating across social media platforms. The release asserts that Dr. Okonjo-Iweala received threats and disturbing calls following a meeting with President Bola Tinubu. It quotes her expressing disappointment at the nature of these communications and questioning the depths Nigeria has reached in terms of negativity.
Flowing from the release, an inquiry conducted by The Explainer Fact Checker discovered that the claims are unfounded and misleading. The claim revolves around a widely shared press release attributed to Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, detailing alleged threats and distressing calls she purportedly received because of an alleged meeting with President Tinubu.

The release casts doubt on the state of Nigeria’s affairs. However, upon examining of Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala’s official Twitter handle, she distanced herself from the circulating press release. In her post, she categorically labels the release as false, deeming it a malicious attempt to sow discord among Nigerians. She urged readers to disregard the release. Again, contrary to the claims and assertions in the said release, there’s been a conspicuous absence of credible media sources substantiating the press statement.
In the light of the information available, the claim surrounding a viral press release accredited to Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has been proven to be patently false and misleading members of the public are advised to discountenance the said release
