Fact checkers at The Explainer have spotted a YouTube video making the rounds, on social media with a number of claims. The first claim is that the woman in the video is the mother of the Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the Labour Party candidate in the March 18, 2023 Lagos State Governorship election. The second claim in the video is that the woman was apologizing on behalf of the LP candidate over an alleged comment that “Lagos is a no man’s land.” The caption in the video containing the claim read: ‘Gbadebo’s mother begs the Yorubas in Lagos and ask forgiveness over statement “Lagos is no man’s land.”

Fact checkers at The Explainer deployed video observation methods to take a close look at the circulating video and compared with videos of the LP candidate’s mother when she made public appearances during the elections. The observation showed no resemblance between woman in the video circulating and that of the LP candidate’s mother. The Explainer can therefore assert with conclusive evidence that the woman in the circulating video seen apologizing over the “Lagos is no man’s land” comment is not the mother of Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour. It would be recalled that during the Lagos State Governorship poll, the question of ethnic identity emerged as a hot button issue, leading to claims and counter claims between the leading political actors in the electoral contest. Frontline observers of the electoral process established a link between the rhetoric on identity and the pockets of violence, which marred the process.
