KANO STATE Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has reiterated his commitment to enhancing efficiency and discipline within the state’s civil service.

During a recent Iftar gathering with permanent secretaries, Governor Yusuf acknowledged their pivotal role as the “engine room of government operations.” He emphasized the importance of upholding discipline and professionalism, stating, “I had the right to fire all Permanent Secretaries, but I understood their importance as the administrative backbone of our government. However, with this privilege comes great responsibility, and discipline must be upheld at all levels.”

The Governor’s stance aligns with ongoing efforts to address challenges within the civil service. Notably, the Kano State Head of Service, Alhaji Abdullahi Musa, reported significant progress in curbing absenteeism and lateness among civil servants, indicating a positive shift towards greater accountability.

In a move to further ensure transparency and integrity, Governor Yusuf recently ordered an investigation into reports of salary underpayment and non-payment affecting civil servants.

He described these issues as unacceptable violations of workers’ rights and a betrayal of public trust.

These initiatives come at a time when Kano State is addressing employment challenges. According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, the unemployment rate in Kano State stood at 7.6% in 2023, with approximately 477,000 individuals unemployed.

By reinforcing discipline and efficiency within the civil service, the Governor aims to improve service delivery and contribute to broader economic development.
