THE LAGOS STATE House of Assembly members have impeached speaker Mudashiru Obasa over several financial and legal violations.
He was impeached by 32 members of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Mr Obasa was immediately replaced by his deputy Lasbat Meranda.
Mrs Meranda who is representing Apapa Constituency 1, was also a former chief whip of the House.
Hon. Fatai Mojeed, the Deputy Chief Whip, was elected to serve as the Deputy Speaker.
An anonymous source stated that Obasa’s expulsion after he had been engulfed in a series of controversial circumstances in terms of financial dealings.
He was accused of abuse of office and gross misconduct.

This is aside from the series of allegations regarding the speaker expending N17 billion on a gate to the assembly complex, which critics argue is excessive and fraudulent. There have also been allegations of mishandling constituency funds and projects.
A report also noted that Mr Obasa was in charge of withdrawing N43.5 billion for MPs’ backup cars in addition to other contentious actions.
The Explainer reported that Obasa was first elected Speaker on June 8, 2015, resuming office alongside former one-term governor Akinwunmi Ambode.
