Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Ghana’s President-elect John Dramani Mahama on his victory in the December 7 presidential election, following his opponent’s concession.
President Tinubu, in a telephone call to Mahama, expressed optimism that Mahama’s return to power would foster greater stability within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which Tinubu currently chairs.
“I commend the people of Ghana for their commitment to democracy, which was evident in the peaceful and successful conduct of their presidential and parliamentary elections,” President Tinubu said in a statement released by his special adviser, Bayo Onanuga, on Sunday.
Tinubu praised Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia, the ruling New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) candidate, for his early concession, describing it as a reinforcement of Ghana’s democratic principles.
“Bawumia’s decision to accept the outcome before the official declaration by the Electoral Commission underscores his statesmanship and respect for the democratic process,” Tinubu added.
John Dramani Mahama, who previously served as Ghana’s president from 2012 to 2017, achieved a historic comeback victory, reflecting what many analysts describe as voter dissatisfaction with the NPP’s handling of the country’s economic challenges.
Vice-President Bawumia’s campaign faced criticism amid rising costs of living and public frustration over the economic crisis.
President Tinubu noted that Mahama’s re-election represents the trust Ghanaians have in his leadership and vision to guide the nation toward greater progress.
He expressed confidence that Mahama’s administration would further strengthen bilateral ties between Nigeria and Ghana.
“Nigeria and Ghana share a rich history, cultural connections, and mutual aspirations for democracy, economic integration, and regional stability,” Tinubu said.
The Nigerian leader also thanked outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo for his leadership and contributions to Ghana’s development and regional peace.
He pledged to collaborate with Mahama’s administration to enhance cooperation in various sectors, aiming for a brighter future for the West African region.
Meanwhile,Mahama’s victory has been widely celebrated as a testament to Ghana’s commitment to democratic values, with political analysts praising the peaceful transition of power in the country.
