Nigerian military athletes emerged as the overall champions at the 2nd Africa Military Games (AMGA) 2024.
Team Nigeria clinched a commanding victory, accumulating an impressive total of 234 medals across 21 sports.
The medal breakdown revealed 114 gold, 65 silver, and 45 bronze medals, solidifying the country’s dominant position in the competition.
Algeria secured the second position with 96 medals, comprising 53 gold, 22 silver, and 21 bronze medals. The North African nation is set to host the 3rd edition of the games, continuing the continental sporting tradition.
Kenya rounded out the top three, winning 59 medals with a composition of 21 gold, 17 silver, and 12 bronze medals.
The top six nations were completed by Ghana, Ethiopia, and Tunisia in fourth, fifth, and sixth places respectively.
The final standings saw South Africa, Libya, and Uganda occupying seventh, eighth, and ninth positions, with Tanzania securing the tenth spot.
Major General Abdullahi Maikano, President of the Organisation of Military Sports in Africa (OSMA), highlighted the significance of the event during the closing ceremony.
“We have seen athletes from diverse backgrounds, transcending borders and differences, united by a common purpose to honour our nations and the ideals we stand for,” he said.
Maikano emphasized that the games were more than just a sporting competition.
“For us in the African Armed Forces, each event was not just a contest of strength and skills, but a testimony of hard work, discipline, unwavering spirits, and cooperation,” he added.
The military sports leader expressed gratitude to the Nigerian military authorities and encouraged participating nations to maintain the spirit of collaboration and friendship forged during the games.
“May these African Games inspire us to foster peace, cooperation, and mutual respect among our nations,” Maikano concluded, highlighting the broader diplomatic significance of the sporting event.
