Pesident Bola Tinubu has directed that the national flag be flown at half-mast for seven days in honor of the late Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, who passed away on Tuesday in Lagos after a period of illness.
The president’s directive was announced by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Wednesday.
Tinubu appreciated the departed army chief’s service to the nation and expressed his condolences to the family, wishing them the fortitude to bear the loss.
The announcement of Lagbaja’s death comes weeks after the Nigerian Army had denied rumors of his demise, stating that he was on medical leave.
The uncertainty over his health persisted until the president appointed Major General Olufemi Oluyede as the acting Chief of Army Staff on Tuesday. Oluyede was subsequently promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General by President Tinubu.
Lagbaja, who was 56 years old, served as the Chief of Army Staff, a position he had held since his appointment by the previous administration.
