The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has released a three-day weather forecast for the country, predicting varying conditions of sunshine and cloudiness from Sunday through Tuesday, with specific warnings for different regions.
According to NiMet’s weather outlook released on Saturday, “the northern region will experience light dust haze on Sunday, with localized visibility ranging from 2km to 5km throughout the forecast period.”
The agency predicts sunny skies punctuated by scattered cloud patches across the region.
For the southern region, NiMet forecasts isolated thunderstorms in specific areas.
“There are slim chances of isolated thunderstorms over parts of Cross River and Akwa Ibom States during the morning hours,” the agency stated.
The forecast continues with predictions of more severe weather:
“There are prospects of thunderstorms along with moderate rains over parts of Ondo, Ogun, Oyo, Edo, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Akwa Ibom, Rivers and Lagos States during the afternoon and evening hours.”
Moving into Monday, the northern region is expected to experience slight dust haze throughout the forecast period.
The North Central region will see sunny skies with occasional cloud patches, while the southern region faces possible thunderstorms with moderate rainfall, particularly in coastal areas during the afternoon and evening hours.
Tuesday’s forecast maintains similar patterns, with slight dust haze continuing in the northern region and sunny skies with cloud patches in the North Central area.
The southern region should prepare for partly cloudy conditions with possibilities of thunderstorms and moderate rainfall along coastal cities during afternoon and evening hours.
Given these weather conditions, NiMet has issued several important advisories.
“The public is urged to take necessary precautions due to suspended dust particles,” the agency warned.
Additionally, individuals with asthma and other respiratory conditions should exercise particular caution, areas prone to thunderstorms should prepare for possible strong winds preceding rainfall, and airline operators are advised to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for operational planning.
