Nigerian Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has expressed his delight over the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) recent ruling, which awarded Nigeria three points and fined Libya’s Football Association $50,000.
This decision comes after Libya’s poor treatment of the Super Eagles before their scheduled Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier on October 15. The Nigerian team was held for over 20 hours without food or water at Al Abaq airport, leading to the match’s cancellation.
CAF’s Disciplinary Board made the ruling, which not only benefits Nigeria with three points but also imposes a significant fine on Libya’s FA, payable within 60 days with no option for appeal.
This verdict boosts Nigeria’s qualification prospects for AFCON 2025, moving them to the top of Group D with 10 points from four matches, four points clear of second-placed Benin Republic.
Libya, with only one point, is now eliminated from contention.
Troost-Ekong took to X (formerly Twitter) to celebrate the verdict, saying, “JUSTICE: CAF awards three points and three goals to Nigeria. Libya fined $50,000.”
Fans and sports commentators have also praised CAF’s decision, with @UgwunnaEjikem tweeting, “Well done to CAF, congratulations to Nigeria.”
Sports commentator Buchi Laba highlighted the ruling’s impact, saying, “Thank you, CAF… Hope this sends a key message to other North African countries and those supporting Libya ¹.”
Nigeria’s next match against Benin Republic on November 14 in Abidjan will determine their qualification for the 2025 AFCON finals in Morocco. A win or draw would secure Nigeria’s spot.
