The Nigerian Police Force has arrested four individuals accused of blackmailing a Croatian national using nude photographs. Force spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi announced the arrests in a statement released Thursday in Abuja.
According to Adejobi, operatives from the National Cybercrime Center (NCC) apprehended the suspects: Abodunrin Rasheed, Abodunrin Tunde, and Abodunrin Rokeeb. The fourth suspect’s name was not disclosed.
The alleged perpetrators met their victim on a dating app, posing as a woman to gain his trust.
“The Croatian was deceived into sending nude pictures through the app,” Adejobi explained.
The suspects then conspired to extort him, threatening to send the images to his family and friends unless he paid a ransom.
The investigation followed a report submitted through the police cybercrime center’s electronic reporting portal.
Adejobi stated, “Operatives conducted a thorough investigation, leading to the suspects’ apprehension.”
Further inquiries revealed the suspects’ involvement in similar cybercriminal activities, defrauding and extorting numerous global victims.
Adejobi noted, “The proceeds were primarily received through gift cards, such as iTunes and Steam gift cards.”
The police recovered six iPhones, two Android phones (Techno and Samsung), and a Lexus car from the suspects.
Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun cautioned Nigerians about online fraud dangers, urging citizens to be vigilant.
He warned cybercriminals, “The Nigeria Police Force will relentlessly fight all sorts of crime and criminality.”
The suspects will face legal proceedings upon completing investigations.
