A deadly cholera outbreak has struck the village of Ndibokote in Ezza Inyimagu, Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, resulting in the tragic loss of 10 lives.
The Ebonyi State Health Commissioner, Moses Ekuma, confirmed the outbreak in a statement released through the ministry’s spokesperson, Lucy Anyim.
Among the victims was a nursing mother, leaving behind a nine-month-old baby, underscoring the devastating impact of the disease on the community.
In addition to the fatalities, approximately 20 individuals affected by the outbreak are currently receiving medical treatment.
Commissioner Ekuma stated, “About 10 persons have died following a cholera outbreak in Ndibokote village of Ezza Inyimagu in the Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.”
He further emphasized that efforts are underway to contain the spread of the disease and provide necessary care to those affected.
In response to the crisis, Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru has taken action, approving the procurement of essential medical commodities to combat the outbreak.
According to the statement, the state government has established three treatment centers to manage the situation effectively: Iziogo Health Centre, Sudan Mission Onuenyim, and a facility in Ndibokote village.
Health officials have identified poor sanitation practices, particularly open defecation, and inadequate hygiene as primary factors contributing to the outbreak.
The Explainer learned, many communities in the affected area rely on streams as their primary source of drinking water, increasing their vulnerability to waterborne diseases like cholera.
The Health Commissioner urged residents to take necessary precautions to prevent the further spread of the disease.
