A group the Concerned Nigerian Patriots CNP has lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu fulfilling his campaign promise to decentralize economic power to the grassroots by securing the autonomy of local governments through the supreme court.
CNP said that this landmark achievement is a testament to his commitment to national transformation and economic recovery.
This was disclosed by the group’s Chairman Alfa Mohammed on Friday in a statement.
Recall the Supreme Court declared that it is unconstitutional for state governors to hold funds allocated for local government administrations.
A seven-man panel, in the judgment delivered by Justice Emmanuel Agim, declared that the 774 local government councils in the country should manage their funds themselves.
The apex court also held that the power of the government is portioned into three arms of government, the federal, the state and the local government.
The court further declared that a state government has no power to appoint a caretaker committee and a local government council is only recognisable with a democratically elected government.
“Regrettably, the beneficiaries of this milestone, including local government workers’ Association, ALGON, and other stakeholders have failed to acknowledge and celebrate this achievement. This silence is a stark reminder of the hypocrisy and betrayal of trust that has hindered progress in our nation.
“President Tinubu has consistently demonstrated the courage to take bold decisions that drive economic growth and national unity, unlike his predecessors who succumbed to vested interests.
“We urge Nigerians to reject advocates of disintegration and support the President’s crusade for national transformation,” the statement said.
