The Federal Ministry of Works has assured its determination to revoke the contract for the construction of Koko-Mahuta-Dabai Road in Kebbi State which was awarded to Mess’r Great Northern International Nigeria Limited (GNIC) in the year 2020.
This was made known by the Spokesman of the Kebbi State House of Assembly, Murtala Diri in a statement issued to Journalists in Birnin Kebbi.
He noted that the Minister of Works Senator David Umuahi made the disclosure, when he received a letter of request from Kebbi State Government, signed by the State Governor, Dr Nasir Idris Kauran Gwandu, conveyed by the Speaker Kebbi State House of Assembly, Mohammed Usman Zuru and former Minister of Communication, Major General Muhammadu Mogoro rtd, seeking the federal government through the ministry of works, for the revocation of 87km Koko-Mahuta-Dabai Road, awarded to Mess’r GNIC Company in the year 2020.
According to him, the letter of the state government which contained the request for the revocation of the contract from the company handling the project became necessary, due to the incompetence and failure to meet the deadline of the contractual agreement, which significantly delayed the completion of the road, causing inconvenience to the residents and commuters in the area, adding that, the 87km road, linking six major agricultural hubs of kebbi state namely; Koko/Besse, Shanga, Fakai, Zuru, Danko/Wasagu and Sakaba, these are areas where we attained tremendous electoral support and of significant importance to President Bola Ahmed Tinibu’s agenda on food security.
He added that, letter further intimated that, since awarding the contract to the Mess’r GNIC Company by the federal ministry of works in the year 2020, no any significant impact was attained by the company in the last 3 years, due to the revocation of contract awarded to Mess’r Great Northern International Nigeria Limited GNIC for the construction of the road.
Diri, in the statement also indicated that the letter also asked the the Federal government to allow the kebbi state government to takeover the project for the construction of the road and for subsequent reimbursement from the federal government.
It added that the Minister of Works David Umuahi promised the delegation of the state government the revocation of the contract within a week.
This new development, was part of the state government’s efforts under the leadership of Comrade Dr Nasir Idris Kauran Gwandu to ensure that, people of Zuru emirate benefit from the dividends of democracy and fulfilment of his campaign promise to the people of the area, the statement concluded.
