In a decisive move, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a stern ultimatum to President Bola Tinubu, demanding the reinstatement of dissolved governing councils in Nigerian universities within two weeks.
The dissolution, implemented by Mr. Tinubu last June, has left universities operating without governing councils for nearly a year, impacting public institutions, polytechnics, and colleges of education alike.
In a statement penned by ASUU’s President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, a notable authority in soil science, the union condemned the dissolution as unlawful and in violation of the Universities Miscellaneous Act. ASUU asserted that this unlawful act has opened the floodgates to irregularities within the Nigerian university system.
Demanding immediate action, ASUU urged President Tinubu to reinstate members whose tenures have not expired and to reconstitute those whose terms have concluded.
While ASUU stopped short of explicitly threatening a strike, it emphasized plans to reconvene in two weeks to assess the situation and “take decisive action to address the issues.”
Further developments on this matter will be provided in due course.
