On April 29, 2024, a video went viral across social media platforms, particularly on X (formerly Twitter) and WhatsApp. The video was accompanied by a caption alleging that it showed Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, an All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant in Ondo State, instructing his thugs to kill people who collected money from him during the primary election.
The caption read: “Listen to Senator Jimoh Ibrahim in this video recorded after he lost the APC Gubernatorial Primary in Ondo State. He was dishing out instructions to his thugs in Yoruba. He said: ‘I have the list of all those who collected money from me. Those whose accounts I transferred money into. You should now go and be killing them one by one. Kill them, their children, and their wives.’ Now, here is a well-read holder of a PhD from Harvard. A renowned business mogul, a serving senator of this nation, and a supposed leader who was aspiring to become the governor of Ondo state. Just because he lost in the primary elections, see what he was doing. This type of character has no business in government. It is obvious that he’s not going there to serve anybody but himself. He is desperate only to massage his ego and satisfy his greed with public resources. Such a despicable character should be kept away from public office.”
Verification:
Jimoh Ibrahim is the senator representing Ondo South senatorial district at the National Assembly and was an APC governorship aspirant. He contested the April 20, 2024, APC governorship primary election against 14 other aspirants in Ondo State. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who assumed power following the death of Rotimi Akeredolu, was declared the winner on April 22, 2024.
About a week after the primary election, the video in question circulated across social media platforms, accompanied by the aforementioned caption.
The CDD War Room conducted a fact-check and found that the voice and footage portrayed as that of Senator Ibrahim was extracted from a movie on Apata TV, a popular Nollywood movies channel on YouTube. The actor in the movie is Samson Eluwole, and the video or context of the discussion is unrelated to Jimoh Ibrahim.
Verdict: FALSE
The CDD War Room confirmed that the video does not show Jimoh Ibrahim giving instructions to kill, and the caption attached to the video is false. The video is an excerpt from a Nollywood movie, and the actor is Samson Eluwole, not Jimoh Ibrahim.
