A message circulating on WhatsApp claims that the Ogun state government is giving N10,000 to its residents amid a rise in the cost of living.
The message is titled: “Ogun State Government ₦10,000 Relief Fund is Ongoing.” It includes a link that asked users to “apply now”.

The caption said; “Due to the high level of Inflation, economic hardship and high cost of feeding, Governor Dapo Abiodun has urged that the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation should open the financial relief support funds to curb distress in the state. Every citizen is entitled to receive the sum of ₦10,000 for 3 Months.”
Dapo Abiodun is the governor of Ogun State, one of the 36 states in Nigeria.
Meanwhile, the Explainer fact checker found a report by some platforms where the governor addressed the media on 15 February 2024 and announced some relief measures for the people of the state.
According to the report, the governor said: “We are providing a one-time N10,000 education support grant for at least 100,000 pupils in our public primary and secondary schools in the state…It is noteworthy that we have continued to pay N10,000 transport allowance to all civil servants for the last 8 months.”
But the report did not mention a grant of N10,000 to every residents for three months, or of a link for applications.
The Explainer fact checker also clicked on the link provided in the message, and it brought up a warning on our phones that read: “Dangerous Site. Attackers on the site you are trying to visit might trick you into installing software or revealing things like your password, phone or credit card number.”
This suggests that the link is a phishing attempt to steal personal or financial information from unsuspecting users. The Ogun state government also debunked the claim as reported by some media platforms.
According to The Special Adviser on Media and Communications to the Governor, Kayode Akinmade, “The Ogun State Government is not involved in any form of cash transfer programme through the link provided in the scam message as https://taskcashup.com/get/OGUN-st-relief-funds/Apply/ogun-reg-portal,” the statement specifically clarified, adding that the link is fraudulent and unauthorized by the government”.
The government also warned that any attempt to access or provide personal information through this link poses a significant risk to individuals and explained that authentic information regarding government intervention programmes and initiatives is disseminated through official channels, including government websites, press releases, and official social media handles.
