The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), said that it is the duty of all Nigerians—north, south, east, and west—to protect what makes the country exceptional, work tirelessly to eradicate anything that would bring it into disrepute, which is a continuous endeavour aimed at holding the political class responsible.
The NUJ also has admonished leaders, citizens to reflect on the pivotal events that reshaped the socio-political landscape of Nigeria and led to the military’s eventual exit from governance.
The NUJ disclosed this in a message to commemorate Nigeria’s Democracy Day on June 12, in a statement by the union’s National Secretary, Achike Chude, noting that working together closely, citizens and leaders must accomplish this aim.
It said that sincere patriotism and personal sacrifice are required of Nigria’s political leaders in light of the current economic difficulties adding that they ought to try to bring our varied people together rather than split it.
“As for our people, from north, south, east and west, we have a duty to hold on to all that is good about our country and to work hard to eliminate those things that bring disrepute to her. We must strive to hold political leadership responsible and accountable at all times.
Highlighting the historic annulment of the June 12, 1993 elections, the union argued that “the incident led to Chief MKO Abiola’s untimely death and that his win represented our shared optimism for a better future. The man who garnered the most votes in that year’s election, Chief Abiola, ultimately paid the price for democracy.
It further noted that we reflect the tumultuous period is crucial to remember the lessons of the past and ensure they do not repeat themselves. Nigeria must remain steadfast on the path to irreversible democratic progress.
“Political leaders need to show true patriotism and make sacrifices in line with the current economic climate. They ought to serve to bring our varied population together rather than separate it.
It stated that “justice, equity, fairness, and inclusivity should be the guiding principles for political leaders as they fulfill their primary duty of governance. Embracing these values is essential for us to collectively confront and overcome the security challenges and socio-economic issues facing our country.”
While acknowledging twenty-five years of uninterrupted democracy, the union congratulated all Nigerians urging them to continue to work together to build a stronger, more united nation.
