Manchester United have terminated Erik ten Hag’s contract as manager following a disappointing start to the Premier League season, with club legend Ruud van Nistelrooy stepping in as interim head coach.
The decision came less than 24 hours after United’s 2-1 defeat to West Ham United, where Jarrod Bowen’s stoppage-time penalty sealed the team’s sixth league loss this season.
The result left the Red Devils languishing in 14th place, having secured only three victories from their opening nine fixtures.
In an official statement, Manchester United acknowledged Ten Hag’s contributions: “We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.”
Ten Hag’s tenure at Old Trafford, which began in April 2022, painted a picture of contrasting fortunes.
While he successfully guided the team to domestic glory, securing the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024, the club’s Premier League performance remained a significant concern.
The Dutch manager had previously faced potential dismissal last season after United finished eighth in the league.
However, a memorable FA Cup victory over local rivals Manchester City had earned him a contract extension until 2026, a deal now cut short by recent poor results.
Van Nistelrooy, a former United striker renowned for his prolific goalscoring record at the club, takes immediate charge as interim head coach.
He will work alongside the existing coaching staff while the club conducts its search for a permanent replacement.
