The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Kwara State has revealed that it handled 159 cases of gender-based violence over the past year.
This disclosure was made in a statement released on Thursday by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Ayoola Michael.
According to the statement, the Gender Unit of the NSCDC, under the leadership of Dr. Umar JG Mohammed, has made significant strides in combating gender-based violence and protecting vulnerable individuals within the state.
The report showed that the incidents included: 76 cases of domestic violence, physical assault, and intimidation, 58 cases of abandonment of responsibility, 11 cases of sexual abuse and rape, 12 cases of threats to life, 2 cases of missing children.
“We have made substantial progress in our efforts to combat Gender-Based Violence and protect vulnerable individuals within the state,” Mohammed stated.
The NSCDC assured the public that several cases are currently being prosecuted in court, with a pledge that all offenders will face legal consequences in accordance with state laws. The corps reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on gender-based violence and expressed its dedication to working with relevant stakeholders to aggressively tackle this societal problem.
In a call to action, the NSCDC urged members of the public to support their efforts by providing actionable intelligence to help prevent crime in the state.
This collaborative approach aims to create a safer environment for all residents of Kwara State.
