The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that 2.6 million voters are registered for the upcoming Edo State election.
INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, revealed this information during a stakeholders’ conference in Benin City on Wednesday.
Professor Yakubu stated, “Sensitive materials are ready and will be delivered to the Central Bank of Nigeria early next week.”
He added that mock accreditation exercises have been successfully completed in preparation for the election.
Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun assured attendees of the force’s commitment to maintaining peace during the polls.
“The main plan is to ensure an environment that guarantees peace during the conduct of the election,” he said.
Egbetokun announced that a significant number of police officers, along with over 8,000 members from sister agencies, will be deployed to ensure security.
The police chief issued a stern warning to potential troublemakers, stating, “Quasi-security outfits and non-state actors must stay away and remain banned throughout the election period.”

Two traditional rulers represented the Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo Oba Ewuare II, at the event.
One of them conveyed the Oba’s message, emphasizing that the monarch remains apolitical and expects the election winner to prioritize Edo State’s development.”
